Bay City News Foundation is excited to partner with Catchlight Local on this project, given our shared interest in telling stories about how inequality plays out in the Bay Area. We are currently producing a series of data-based stories and aim to develop more robust packages in the months ahead — the perfect opportunity to pair up with a visual storyteller to create compelling content about and for our region.

Bay City News Foundation is backed by charitable donations from contributors who care about local news, a free press, democratic values and an informed citizenry. We target geographic and topical news deserts. We collaborate with other media. We experiment with technology. We work with journalism schools to train the next generation.

The affiliated Bay City News, which distributes stories published on the Local News Matters site, is an influential, 24/7 regional wire service that was founded in 1979. Its reports are carried by nearly 100 news organizations, including TV and radio stations, newspapers and websites in the Bay Area. Based in Oakland, with seven bureaus across the 9-county region, it is a crucial conduit of local news that has provided on-the-ground, accurate reports about government, courts, public officials, events and the environment for more than 40 years.
