Magnum Foundation Presents Photography Expanded: "Lines And Lineage"

On May 1st, 2018, Tomas van Houtryve gave a 30-minute artist talk about Lines and Lineage at The New School in New York as part of the Magnum Foundation‘s Photography Expanded Symposium.

The symposiums’s theme was counter-histories. During his presentation, he explained how the existing visual record of the American West helped create the Western mythology of Anglo “pioneers” and cowboys, while studiously ignoring centuries of Hispanic history in the region. Listen to hear about his artistic approach selecting landscapes and portraits to visualize the unseen period of history of the West before U.S. annexation in 1848.
