Everyday Bay Area

Everyday Bay Area is a project of CatchLight and The Everyday Projects, in partnership with KQED Public Media and PhotoWings. We are focusing the power of visual storytelling to help San Francisco Bay Area residents see and understand each other across identities, ages, demographics and geographies.

Based on a curated Instagram feed, Everyday Bay Area encourages professionals and amateurs alike to shoot “photography that matters.” We seek stories that connect people — images that ignite curiosity and promote inclusion, tolerance and respect.

Everyday Bay Area (“EDBA”) is a diverse collective of 20 Bay Area photographers who create compelling visual stories that expand the common narratives of Bay Area life, in order to foster a more inclusive society. The EDBA concept encourages professionals and amateurs alike to shoot “photography that matters” as a platform for San Francisco Bay Area residents to see and understand each other across identities, demographics and geographies. In alignment with the global network of “Everyday Projects,” EDBA builds digital narratives that inspire, surprise and inform through addressing the need for multiple perspectives in portraying the cultures that define us.

EDBA photographers are selected through peer recommendations as well as through open calls. The EDBA images of Bay Area life are shared globally through an Instagram feed, @EverydayBayArea. Support and community connection are integral components of this collective. Industry leaders do “takeovers” of the feed and meet with the group at monthly in-person meet-ups which offer creative support and opportunities for professional growth. The general public is invited to submit images to the the EDBA Instagram feed and curated selections are highlighted in special content streams.
